My favorite thing about life in the country ? There is so much for the eye to banquet on . We have way more than the distinctive four time of year in our share . The landscape painting is always change , draw us outside to explore and permit our imaginations function waste . Every emergence of unexampled industrial plant or animal life on the farm excites my soul , but I hold a special place in my essence for the happenings of October .
Our treescape is already conduct on a prosperous tinge , andtheoreticallythe humidness will soon dissipate , making way for the cool , snappy air that lends itself to flannel shirts and cozy scarves . What ’s not to love about that ?
While at long last being able to once again take a stroll around the pool or through our wood without returning a sweaty mess , here are a few things that have piqued our stake .

1. Persimmons
We ’re favourable to have severalnative persimmon treesin our backyard . Even though our grandad tree , which is know throughout our neighbourhood , take a hard hit in one of the summer ’s severe storms , we have tidy sum of fruits to glean from the surrounding belittled trees .
They are beautiful round , orange fruits that taste best when they turn to shriveled brown guck .
As I ’ve collected this twelvemonth ’s fruit , I remembered this clock time last twelvemonth , when I did the same harvest but never had a chance to utilise them before I went into labor with our girl and abruptly became preoccupied with new - parent life .

This year , I ’m excited to experiment with this native yield that does n’t get enough culinary attention . In fact , I just borrowed a solid food James Mill from a friend and plan to sue pulp tonight . More to come on what recipes emerge .
2. Glow Worms
The fireflies on our farm are astonishing . When you get away from the lights of the city on a summertime night and gaze through the dark forest , the show is enchanting .
What I ’d not notice before , however , are the glow worms .
Glow worms are lightning bug larva , and currently our arena is alight with these sorcerous crawling wight . It ’s been fun to venture out at nighttime to see them — treading cautiously , of row .
3. Hazelnuts
Let me preface my excitation for these treasure hidden around the farm by saying thathazelnutshave always been my favourite in company nut mixes . And one word : Nutella .
Some friends who were camping on our land add up to breakfast one morning with handful of hazelnuts . We have some foraging work ahead of us — and perhapsa more worthy nutcracker — if we want to make our own haywire - chocolate spread , but I ’m up for the challenge .
4. Jack-in-the-Pulpit Berries
I ’ve remark a few bright - blood-red lot of Jack - in - the - dais berries enshroud among our brush , which I determine exciting because I had n’t noticed the prime grow this year . Jack - in - the - soapbox is a medicative herb whose theme has traditionally been used for respiratory conditions and treating snake bites .
Getting to do it a new plant always gives me a minuscule buzz , and now that I ’ve spot the seeds , I can help distribute them around the farm .
It always get me what new things expect find outside of our doors . This October offer a monitor to stay on curious and to domesticate this valued kinship with our farm land .
