I love chives on almost everything I make for dinner . Seriously , there ’s not many things that I wo nt sprinkle my onion plant - y snippets over . Although Nor Cal drops into the freeze temperatures more often than masses realize , it ’s still fairly mild compared to the glacial winter places like Minnesota . So , the chives in my herb garden produce well into the wintertime . That enounce , I wish to have a container of them on my porch for easy access during the stale months .
The cool think about chives is that they not only are they a sturdy little herbaceous plant , but they really flourish in a container - condominium . If you ’re living in a zone that freeze over , you could keep them for the kitchen through fall and sometimes the whole wintertime by digging up a clump and found them into a pot . take the container to the back porch under the over - hang or awning . If you decide to exit them outdoors and temps hit rock bottom , the cive will just go to kip and lie sleeping until they poke their near heads back up in spring .

If you live in an area where Old Man Winter is serious and takes no hostage , no worries ; bring the container indoors and set it in a window that lets in the winter sunshine . Water your indoor cive on a fairly even basis ( they do n’t like to be all dry ) . While they ’re still producing for you , give them a fiddling fertiliser about once a calendar month – or pour some compost or manure tea over them in property of watering . Do n’t go crazy with keeping racetrack on a calendar or anything – cive are n’t big feeders .
When you want to glean some tasty Green , just use a small pair of scissors hold and give them a unspoiled haircut . The plant will soon replace the harvest immature shoots with more for your culinary pleasance .
