Fall into digging with exciting plants and a garden makeover!
Ah , early replenishment ! Hot days are n’t over yet , but industrial plant are as ready as we are to get back to work . Actually , skeleton - foliage Bucephela clangula daisy never takes holiday .
It treat my ( compost ) clay soil just fine , always looks good , and attracts good insect with late spring and descend flowers . It would bloom in summer too , but it was a “ tad dry ” for me this troll . This pellet withSalvia greggiiis at theLady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center , but I made a similar match .
It ’s on Nathan Unclebach ’s poor list , too , whenhe joins Tom this workweek . Perhaps you ’ve run into him atHill Country Water Gardens & Nurseryas a go - to guy wire to satisfy your garden hankerings .

Sure , you know HCWG&N for ponds , fountains , and streams .
They ’ve also got unique landlubbers fit just for us . Since now ’s primetime to put the foot lever to the metal ( shovel ) , Nathan banishes our summer blues . One he advance in good drainage is Gopher flora ( Euphorbia rigida ) that pair well with agaves , like thisA. parryi . Great in containers , too .
If you ’d like a yucca but do n’t have tons of elbow room , is n’t thisYucca gloriosa‘Tiny Star ’ a cutie ? Beyond is groundcover Silver ponyfoot ( Dichondra argentea ) .

Peter ’s Purple monarda ( bee balm ) is a recurrent wiz . This guy ’s tall — possibly hit 4’—with vibrant previous spring / early summer blossom that are irresistible to bees , butterfly stroke , and hummingbirds . I ’m planning to include some next to a silvery cenizo . Wo n’t that be a knock out ?
For shady spots , Nathan shows off African hosta ( Drimiopsis maculata ) . I have it away mine . They ’re evergreen in protect containers . In the ground , they go dormant in wintertime , but recall very fast .
A bit of sun brings out their burgundy smear . In my case , it ’s when they emerge in later wintertime and the deciduous trees send more sunlight their way of life . Their bulbs multiply tight and are easy to divide . And so drought sturdy .

Oh yea , it ’s time to imbed tree in the next few calendar month , so moot one of Nathan ’s favorite for another silvery look : Texas tidy sum bay wreath ‘ Silver Peso . ’
Here ’s some of Nathan ’s handwork in a creative succulent container , perfect timing for the ACL Festival . Check out the slight beer bottles , too . Nathan ’s one for detail , I ’ll say that ! But I think she is missing her wrist band . . .
On go , see how creativedesigner Russell Womackturned around this LXX yard .

Along with breaking up proscribe barriers and get by with drain exit , he bushel wildlife with drought tough plants . Mexican bush sage ( Salvia leucantha ) , is an outstanding crepuscule blooming perennial that you could implant now .
I absolutely jazz this aboriginal pinkish queer - gabardine ( Calliandra eriophylla ) but I ’ll admire this cervid - resistant desert plant from afar . I hear it in my soil and it send me a very beggarly exit alphabetic character ( though it did n’t make a dance picture ) ! Sun and rockier or gravelly weather : you ’re unspoiled to go .
Russell gave the back some profundity and personality . Here we ’ve got dwarf Mexican Olea europaea ( Cordia ) , bamboo muhly , Salvia greggii , Bat - typeface cuphea and cotoneaster . AND , here ’s Russell ’s plant list .

Well golly , you ’ve just got to see it all !

Daphne ’s out of town this workweek , but she ’d state us : It ’s time to split your whiskered flag . Cut off rootstalk that are rotting or have borer holes . surcharge off the young showtime to re - plant . Lightly fertilize with a mellow phosphorous portmanteau or bone repast to encourage beautiful blooms next spring !
