Focusing on the small things

Today ’s exposure come from Ellen Kirby in Winston - Salem , North Carolina . We previously sport her gardenhere , here , andhere .

This photograph focuses in on a tiny musical composition of beauty . Sometimes in the garden we ’re so focussed on the big flowers and leaves and our garden design that we block that the most magical moments can be just a bit of bright greenish moss fly high among the gem .

Mist flower ( Conoclinumcoelestinum , Zones 5–10 ) is a wonderful little wildflower that is aboriginal to a wide swath of eastern North America but not grown enough in gardens . The airy blue flowers keep coming all summertime and well into fall , it is beloved of butterfly and other pollinators , and generally it is a wonderful small plant . It does wish to spread out , however , so give it way , and plant taller plants around it that wo n’t be gobbled up .

Azaleas are always howling . Every southern garden has bunch of them , and you always involve more .

Garlic chives ( Alliumtuberosum , Zones 3–9 ) is a fantastic industrial plant that is both comestible and cosmetic . The leafage have a flavour similar to that of chive and can be used the same way in preparation , and the white bloom appear in previous summer , in good order when you need something new and beautiful in the garden the most . Pollinators , peculiarly butterflies , adore the flush as well . But , again , be warned that it like to spread . Each clump will grow slowly , and if you let it , it can sow around , so trend off the faded flowers if you ’d like it to remain a little more quiet .
