Feed, water and re-pot as they return to growth, says Ruth
The garden is n’t the only place where the warmer weather and longer , light days are work their thaumaturgy on our plant – houseplants are benefitting too . Most indoor plants will have come in a dormant state in winter , meaning we have n’t needed to fee and water them .
But now they are starting to grow again and need care and attending to make certain they reach their potentiality over the twelvemonth in advance .
The obvious exceptions to this principle are plants already in flower that were sacrifice as gifts . They will have needed feeding , watering and deadheading through the wintertime and if they have finished anthesis will require a period of rest to reestablish their energy . Christmas cacti , for example , will be rest now and require less water and plant food and will do considerably if strike to a cooler room for a couple of months . Repeat this in September to avail them regain their vigour needed for bloom next winter .

Other houseplants will need tearing and feeding again after their winter sleep . body of water when the compost feels dry to the touch and run fortnightly , either using proprietary houseplant food or a general purpose fluid fertiliser .
Cacti , succulents and orchids do easily with specifically excogitate plant food , which are wide available . Frugal lacrimation is undecomposed for cacti and succulents , and orchids do good with rainwater or tap body of water that has been left standing for a day or two so the chemicals can dissipate .
Most houseplants amount from temperate zones with high humidness , so mist their leaves every few Clarence Day to mime their natural environment . Do n’t obscure furry - leaved plants like African violets as you will mark their foliage . Stand houseplants somewhere clean , but out of direct sunlight that can singe their eaves , and keep them aside from draft . Once they are get again well you could divide and re - throne those that need it .
