How to get a Rustic Finish on New Wood in 4 steps! Getting a rustic finish on new wood can be tricky and there are several methods how to attain it. This is just one way that I get an old wood look made easy.
Getting a rustic finish on new wood is very gentle . This step by stone’s throw DIY is for everyone and creates that onetime well worn look we all know . ( well , most of us )
You all may remember myDIY Rustic BoxI shared . I had many postulation on how I accomplish the well - worn agrestic finish .
It is very soft and 4 basic steps are all that are involve .

1. Stain Your Wood
This post contain affiliate links . If you make a leverage after clicking a link I may make a modest military commission at no price to you .
I use a water - base stain bySaman , in Dark Walnut . I love this stuff . It is so easy to work with and I get a dandy finish . you’re able to also apply an oil color - based stain if you prefer but my minor space is near atmosphere - tight and when I am work on stuff in winter I do n’t want the fumes .
I also like using a method with acrylic paint that is very simple to accomplish which you could find the step - by - step didactics here . DIY Stain with Acrylic Paint

Let the stained forest dry .
2. Brush on some crackle Medium
On this particular project , I usedDecoArt Americana Chalky Finish crackle medium . I just sweep some on here and there , I do n’t hide the entire circuit card . Each make of bottled craft acrylic fiber have their own variant and all puzzle out well . Let crackle medium teetotal . Plaid Folk Art and DecoArt Craft paint also have crackle mass medium in 2 oz nursing bottle sizes.(for a more in astuteness clause on using Crackle paint go here )
( some wish to use Elmers Glue for this but I prefer a real crackle coat , I regain I have more ascendency ) .
3. Paint board with white paint.
I have used both acrylate resin latex and theDecoArt Chalky Finish in Everlasting . Both work well , the chalky stopping point is a bit easier to sand off for distressing but the latex paint is fine if you allow it dry thoroughly . You will notice I did not thoroughly cover the display panel with rouge , I left edge and tenuous spots here and there .
As the paint dries the greaves will show up . Do not over brush when applying as the crackling spiritualist will let the blusher move and you will have mere blotches instead of crackles .
4. Sand, sand, sand.
Once the greatcoat has dried , I use a palm sander and I just sandpaper by with 100 grit sandpaper . Pretty soon it looks like this .
you could stop there or sand even more for a look similar to this …
5. Seal and Finish the Wood
distinction : if you are going to paint a design on the wood do not put the finishing on yet , wait until you paint your aim then seal the total thing then . If you seal it now it will make it heavy to transfer a figure with graphite newspaper .
Now to end up and seal the woods .
you’re able to finish it off with aclear waxor if you want it a bit darker use adark wax(I used the clear wax then the non-white wax to give it a bit more attribute ) . I have seen them cash in one’s chips over with a grey stain to tote up a bit of a different finish and I am going to try that shortly too . I will share how I like it . I have also finished them with aexterior varathanein a matte or satin cultivation , whichever you hope . justly now my corner is being used to store my dishes on my comeback but I am making more for other thing too . So check back if you want to see what I do with them . Like this .. then sense free to PIN(UPDATE : I have a tutorial on building this crate / box , so if you wish well to build oneCLICK HERE )
