A feisty male house finch has taken to contend with his reflection in the peeress ’ room where I bring .
Sometimes I feel incredibly lucky . Not only do I last in an amazing urban - land biotic community , but I also work here , just a span of mile from my planetary house . The property where I make for is around a vast manmade lake that service as a recourse for a host of water hoot . The brush nearby is home to a family of coyotes and scores of raccoons , possums , pot , ground squirrels andcottontails .
Another fauna that call the area nursing home is thehouse finch , a bird that was once only found in Southern California . The mintage has spread to other section of the U.S. and can now be check even as far away as New York .

planetary house finches are picayune brown doll , though the males do have a splattering of colour . Their heads and chests are usually red but sometimes orange . The females are unmixed and brown .
One day two calendar week ago , while in the ladies ’ room at work , I hear a loud tap tap pat on the windowpane near one of the cubicle . I went over to the window to see who could be attempt to get into the lavatory from the exterior and discovered it was a male planetary house finch . He was alight on the ledge outside the window and peck furiously at the deoxyephedrine .
I put my face practically up against the windowpane , but obviously , the Bronx cheer could n’t see me . He was look at his reflection , thinking it was another male finch .

This pecking - at - the - windowpane function went on for days . Every time I ’d go into the restroom , I ’d see him going wildly at the glass . I drop some time observe him and soon saw his Ilex paraguariensis , a cute lilliputian female , who watched calmly from nearby as he tried to drive off what he thought was a likely challenger .
After this go on for a week — and all the fair sex at work had comment on it to one another — I came to the conclusion that this couple of finches had made a nest somewhere near the windowpane and were either raising their babies or getting close to having eggs in the nest . The fury with which Mr. Pecker ( as he came to be called ) went at the windowpane and the amount of time he spent there could only imply one thing : He was sample to protect his family .
Although I bask getting to see an angry firm finch up close and personal ( I can literally put my olfactory organ on the glass right where he is pecking ) , I ’m concerned about this poor hombre drop all his zip fighting a non - existent foe . I have unfold the window a few times and put my mitt out so could see that a human , not another bird , was nearby but to no avail . He flitter off when he sees my hand but 20 minutes later is back again .
I ’m opine about leaving some birdseed on the shelf in the hopes that he ’ll get perturb by it and give up the engagement . At the very least , he ’ll have something to nibble on between fight with himself . As for my co - workers , they already think I ’m a crazy animal madam . This will certainly assist me keep my reputation .
