From bare soil to a shady garden
Paul and Heather Shelley are sharing their garden with us today .
We pop garden severely here over a decade ago . At the beginning , our corner lot was nothing but dirt , as we had bought a fresh build house in northern Indiana ( Goshen ) .
We started with major structural plants , trees , and shrubs for concealment around the border of the grounds , and now we are in the process of transitioning to a louche yard , as the trees have mature over the last 22 year .

firmly to imagine this started as a completely blank pot ! Planting trees and shrubs is always a great way to begin a fresh garden and create a beautiful blank space as they mature .
The large shrub to the correct looking at like dappled willow ( Salixintegra‘Hakuro Nishiki ’ , Zones 5–7 ) , which has showy pink - and - whitevariegatednew growth that is so coloured that it almost looks like it is in flower .
thrifty plantings of shrubs have create a lot ofprivacyin the thousand , and there ’s a beautiful littlesitting nooktucked away amid all the greenery .

Catmint ( Nepeta×faassenii , Zones 3–8 ) is a great , long - blooming perennial that produces swarm of smallblue flowersin the summer and is immune to bothdeerandrabbitdamage . The name “ catmint ” come from the industrial plant ’s near relationship to catnip ( Nepetacataria , Zones 3–9 ) , which is famous for its rash drawing card to cat . Catmint has gaudy flower and wo n’t lure every isolated African tea in your neighborhood .
A divers selection of shrubs , manyevergreen , provides a strong backbone to this garden so it will front serious every Clarence Day of the year .
nappy lawn provide a tidy delimitation to the increasingly shadowy garden beds .
