Our beautiful Barred Rock , Kimora , passed away on March 6 , 2017 . She was five years onetime , more than halfway - aged by chicken standards , but you could n’t assure by looking at , interact with , or listen her . She was loud and majestic , especially after agood bollock - laying session , and was as spry as the day webrought her household .

She was always the first to begin laying in the saltation and the last to go on hiatus in the downfall . She founder us perfectly smooth , large brown eggs almost every Clarence Shepard Day Jr. , and even into her 5th year , she still averaged three or four eggs a week . Such an overachiever she was !

Kimora was my alpha hen , and she did n’t have her sisters block it . If mealworms , grasshopper , orfig beetleswere imply , she was always the first in line for kickshaw , or the first to recoil into action and catch them out of the air . If one of the other poulet get a keep of them first , she ’d run over and snatch the hemipteran out of their beaks , and get down them whole before the others could avenge . Nothing could stand in the manner of Kimora and a risque goody !

Kimora as a pullet

If we were sifting the compost , illuminate out weeds , raking up oldmulch , or grok over a garden seam , she was right there alongside , furiously grave and pick through the soil . And if she arrive at the worm jackpot , a glad succession ofbok bok boooooks!would ring through the vicinity to let everyone else know .

But despite her feisty personality and diva - like way , Kimora was far from selfish . I always felt that she was very protective over her sister , and led the sight with cautiousness , courageousness , and pride . I feel that she was the reason Iman survived on thattragic dark , as we have n’t see that raccoon ( or any racoon ) in the yard since . And for that , she will always hold an extra special place in our heart for a strength and bravery that fills us with so much joy and yet so much sadness at the same time .

Kimora was a very social bird and as soon as she take heed the sound of the gate hatchway , she ’d execute right up to whoever was there to visit . And I really do mean turn tail — she was the fastest chicken in the flock , and could get quite a bit of line clock time as well !

One of my fondest memories of Kimora was hanging out in the backyard on the hammocks with a couplet of friends . The chickens were milling about , doing what it is that chickens do , when all of a sudden Kimora flew up into my friend ’s lap covering and looked at him matter - of - factly , as if to say , I ’m here for my butt boodle ! ( She always loved a good scratch on her tail feathers . )

Our dear Kimora , we omit you so much . We hope you ’re fly high and free in the heavens withGisele , enjoying a bottomless buffet of fig beetle , and continuing to watch over Iman and her young flockmates . Thank you for bring instant smiles to our faces without even seek , and for teaching us so much in the short clip you were here with us .
