Introducing Hudson House

In the gist of Vancouver just in the south of VanDusen Gardens lie the Hudson House , belonging to Susan . I first meet Susan at a talk of the town I was doing for the Vancouver Garden Club . After the talking , we chatted for a snatch about her garden and her passion for gardening was immediately vindicated .

This past summertime , I was sourcing gardens for Garden Gate Magazine . I put out a call , asking if anyone in Vancouver knew of somebeautiful garden that would be complete for the magazine .

Susan answer to my callwith some pictures of her garden , and they were absolutely lovely . I just know the time had add up for me to in the end visit it . I had to go see it !

The Front Garden

Like me , and many Vancouverites , Susan’sfront lawn was sickly and struggling . age ago , she decided to remove it entirely and replace it with aboxwood knot garden . Susan gush to me about how she does n’t have to do any mowing and that the small hedges aredrought - tolerant .

Today , the front garden at Hudson House is very decorative , welcoming you with a fragile air of formalities thanks to this knot garden full ofintricately design architectural hedges .

The front thou also hasmany shrubs which help soften the front yard ’s structure , including old rhododendron and massive western crimson cedars .

path and tree

Susan also included a path through the garden with creeping thyme and lithodora fill the gaps , and hornbeams arrange in gravel line the side .

Unique Ironwork Sculptures

By far , the biggest standout of Susan ’s garden is the ironwork carving she has featured throughout it . What ’s even more particular is thatthey’re all made by her boy .

The first one you ’re greeted with integrates human anatomy with vegetables and flora cloth . Like a human bust , it is topped withRomanesco broccoli , which is just the coolest thing to include in the garden .

There ’s another sculpture further down in the garden of afigure doing a handstand . It ’s entrap in the heart of the path as you walk through this pointed wooden trellis .

Susan ’s garden is full of these really creative element , creating a beautiful artist ’s garden .

The Rear Garden

In contrast to the formality of the front one thousand , the rear garden is a very formationcollection of informal , mixed plantingssurrounding a cobbled patio .

In Susan ’s words , “ reckon on the conditions ( ! ) , my garden at the rear of the house should have severalrosesin bloom , hydrangeas , fuchsia , phlox , Borago officinalis , honeysuckle , clematis , sage , and manyshade - loving flora , especially fern and flat coat covers . herb , raspberries , and some vegetables are also in the mixture . ”

Honestly , one of the most delicious features of the garden to me was the multicoloured chairs sitting around the table . It just showsSusan ’s garden ’s creative difference of opinion in panache and artistic quality .
