The problem for many small-space vegetable gardeners is how to create a beautiful and functional garden when there’s little room to grow.
Whenever I give a public lecture about low - space vegetable gardening , there ’s always someone in the audience who asks about design . As in , how to plan a lowly veg garden so it ’s as beautiful as it is functional .
I can offer a few design suggestions , especially on how to make the most of the space withvertical solutions .
However , now I can aim them to the creative idea in Susan Morrison ’s fresh Holy Writ : The Less is More Garden : Big Ideas for Designing Your Small Yard(Timber Press , 2018 ) . Susan is a well - known landscape intriguer in California and a national expert on small - space garden invention .

Her book of account is bound to breathe in you to think about your vegetable arise in a unlike way . Because she capture the essence of small spaces , it ’s soft to think how to take her ideas and employ them to any small space .
The less is more mindset has to do with enjoying the space you have , instead of longing for a large infinite . In her designs , less space means more enjoyment , more beauty , more relaxation and a garden that is “ more YOU . ”
All of her figure approximation for ornamental gardens can be adapted to spring up fruits , vegetables and herbaceous plant . Consider add H2O features ( or the illusion of water ) , hardscape constituent and standout plants . terrace , chairs , mirrors and garden art add together design elements to any vegetable garden infinite .

When it come to the comestible garden , Susan explain how to set vegetables when there ’s no garden infinite .
“ If you need vegetable in your landscape painting but miss the room for a dedicated elevate bed , do n’t jettison the thought of growing your own eatable plants , ” she writes . “ Explore some of the many clever system now wide available for planting vertically on wall or fences , such as Woolly Pockets . ”
She also encourages gardeners to mix vegetables and herbs with cosmetic plants , either in the ground or in pots .

An especially helpful mesa in the book is called ‘ duple - duty herbaceous plant . ” Susan ’s idea is to “ look for less common version of the classic ” and pick out herbs that tote up a mixing of colors and grain . Some of her recommendations admit Cuban oregano , Chef ’s Choice Rosmarinus officinalis , Tricolor salvia and Highland Cream thyme .
After you thumb through Susan ’s volume , you ’re sure to see your vegetable garden in a fresh , new way .
( Timber Press ply a gratuitous copy for this review ; opinions are always my own . )
