Lettuce quick for embed outside after 4 weeks .

I started greens like lettuce , arugula , bok choy and spinach seeds on Jan 18 , 2022 . That is really early but I want to get them in the greenhouse and stale frame of reference too soon . These steps would be the same for doing many other crops like chard , cabbage , simoleons , tomatoes only the seed get going dates will alter . Many small seeds can be started this way .

To start out ejaculate I use a sprouting tray squall a ‘ 20 row germ tray’(google it to see where you could purchase these online ) . I use this style of sprouting trays for humble seminal fluid that I want tostart deep down and under lightsfor a head start in my garden . I reduce the tray up into small sections but it ’s not necessary . come will sprout much quicker in these sprouting trays . If you germinate seeds straight into a bigger potbelly or a pony pack , it will take much longer . If you desire to read about how I implant the seeds in these germination trays gohere .

Lettuce ready for planting outside after 4 weeks.

This station is about the footmark I do after I ’ve germinated the seeds and how I transfer seedlings into pony clique .

lave your pony packs ( 4 pack or 6 pack)if you are reuse themin whitener and water system ( I do n’t appraise just a shortsighted pour in a sinkhole full of water to disinfect them . I do n’t scrub them - just dunk them in the bleach water and then rinse them in clean water system ( like bartenders ) and let them dry . If they are new pots , you may skip this footstep .

weaken the semen starting premix . If you do n’t , the soil will not be damp enough and the seedling could die if it drys out . You want your dirt dampish but not dripping . I like “ Moonshine ” dirt mixwhich has many organic nutrients andmycorrhizal in it which gets the seedlings off to a good start . you could bribe it atAgua Fria Nurseryhere in Santa Fe or onAmazon . I use Moonshine for both starting seeds and when transplant up to bigger raft .

Here the cleaned pots are next to the sprouting tray quick to graft . I always keep my pack from former flower packs until they descend apart . Put seed filth mixture in the pony locoweed . Do n’t blank out to put some tape on the pony inner circle to save down which crop are in each pot . It ’s also good to keep a written platter as well .

Put hole in pony packs . I used a pen to make holes . I will put one seedling in each hole .

practice your fingerbreadth to widen hole if source need more room - do not wedge them in a muddle or else make the hole gravid .

2 wash pots

Handling seedling mildly by the top leave not the stem which could get damaged if you twitch too hard . Put the seedling deep in the hole . The prow should be buried andonly the leaf are just above the dirt . Tamp down the soil and tally a little more soil if needed butdo not cover the leaves where new leaves emerge , only the stem . irrigate them with seaweed and SuperThrive or Vitamin B-12 ( for plants not mankind )

These seedlings were transpose 2 calendar week later on Feb 3 , 2022 . One seedling plant per great deal section . Do n’t over crowd . If you uprise this way , you will get bigger industrial plant because they do n’t have to contend with other baby plants which are many time really crowded in the packs and root bound . produce coolheaded dauntless common .

Above are the seedlings on Feb 17th . They are ready to plant in the nursery and stale frame . It ’s still a lilliputian too cold at nite ( small 20 ’s ) so I will wait a couple of days till the night temperature are in the eminent 20 ’s stage or higher before planting . I ’m a bit of a risk taker when seek to imbed early on as a severe cold night can vote down them even in an unheated green house like I have . But I ’ve done this before this early and cold - fearless park can usually allow moth-eaten temperatureswith some help . My goal is to get lettuce big enough to eat up by mid - March instead of just start them . But you may wait till March to initiate them as well but you want to harvest them before it get hot and they bolt ( signifier seed head ) and get vitriolic . Most mass await too late to plant while I run to plant really early which may or may not pull through calculate on how cold it gets .

1 dampen seed soil mix

Since I am sneaking them so too soon , they will definitely needwinter weight dustup coverover them every Nox even in the green house or frigid frame . In fact to begin , I may put2 winter weight unit row coverson them at dark . Do not expend a seam canvass - it does n’t offer any protectionwhile words cover will offer 6 - 8 degree shelter . One winter weight run-in covering fire ( .90 + ) will protect down to 24 ° Fand if you see it will be moth-eaten , go ahead and cast another row cover on them .   riffle the cover(s ) off in the day metre and flip back on the plant at nighttime .   As it get warmer above 24 ° F at night you wo n’t require 2 row cover . The whole process from planting seeds to transplant takes about 4 week using this method and supplies . Then they grow another 4 calendar week in the greenhouse and cold frame and I will start to harvest them . I should start foot cabbage in about another month or preferably . Woo ! Hoo !

I also have a TV here recording ALL the steps of transplantation .   I made a few mistakes in the video . I said I was planting bok choy but in reality I was embed arugula . The seed were planted Jan 18 and they were transplanted on Feb 2 out of the sprouting trays into the pony packs in this television . This was my first indoor video recording which was harder to take than outdoors but you will see the actual steps in progress .
