The 2018 growing time of year is swinging into gear ! All the planning is now becoming a realism in the greenhouse and out on the secret plan . I have a smallish space useable for growing solid food , just three erect beds , each 8’x4′. I pass a stack of time over the winterplanningwhat I would raise with the aim of hug the maximal potential yield out of the plot . This is the layout for the first part of the farm time of year , taking us to mid - summertime or thereabouts .
So , what ’s going on ?

Seeds sow
I have been busy in the inseminate department since theFebruary plot update .
Beetroot ‘ Boltardy ’ . I ’ve sown in modules , 3 or 4 seeds per module . They germinated fair fast and are doing ok in luxury fitting in the heated up bench . I ’ll move them on to cooler unwarmed accommodation in the greenhouse and then on to the cold frame . I take aim to plant them out on the patch at the end of the calendar month , or early April . I ’m aiming for 4 or 5 seedlings per module , I will melt off out to that number if they are more crowded than that . I will plant out as a clump , leaving a bit more space . This is the approach recommended byCharles Dowding .

projectile . An over - enthusiastic early sowing which are a moment straggly and leggy . I might compost these and go again .
Peas ‘ Blauschokker ’ . Sown about 10 days ago , no signaling of germination so far .
Leeks ‘ musselburgh ’ . I ’m doing two great deal of leeks this year , an early and a maincrop . This is the other slew that I am intend to reap in the summertime as child scallion . They are just about germinating now , having been sow in a couple of weeks ago .

Onions , two varieties ‘ Bedfordshire Champion ’ and ‘ Red Brunswick ’ . I sowed more than I demand , so the fact that germination has been a bit patchy is less of a concern than it might have been . These will go out on the plot in clod like the beet . I ’ll be capable to harvest springtime onions from each clump , allowing the rest to grow to medium sizing onions .
carrot , three varieties ‘ Early Nantes 2 ’ , ‘ former Nantes 5 ’ and ‘ Firewedge ’ . These were seed verbatim on the plot to avoid root hoo-ha . It ’s still quite coolheaded out but I have had cloches cover the priming coat for a few weeks now which should have raised the soil temperature a few degrees . I have sown seeds in half of the alloted squares . I ’ll do one-half of the remainder in 2 or 3 weeks , then the respite a few weeks after that . This should signify I get a nice craw of carrots over a period of a duad of months . Or that ’s what it should think . In praxis , carrots have always been rubbish for me , so my confidence is low . We shall see . I sowed 3 or 4 come in each location , 16 placement per square base . I ’ll dilute them out to 1 carrot per emplacement once they ’re up .
Spring onion plant , two varieties ‘ Apache ’ and ‘ White capital of Portugal ’ . These went in the gaps between the cultivated carrot seeds . There are two reasons for this : firstly to get more harvest from the blank , but also because carrot fly allegedly do n’t like onion plant . The spring onion turn more quick than the carrots so will be harvested and out of the way before the carrot grow to fill the space .

Radish ‘ Celesta ’ . In a duo of the carrot squares I sow radish in the gaps instead of spring onion . Same rationale , they are fast develop .
Potatoes ‘ Charlotte ’ and ‘ Lady Crystl ’ . My earlies and 2nd earlies , these have been chitting on a cheery window sill for the last month or so . They are taking their time , the shoots are all still small . I require to plant these by the remnant of the calendar month so they had well get a move on . otiose chits !
originate on :

Broad dome , three sort ‘ Crimson bloom ’ , ‘ Red gourmet ’ and ‘ De monica ’ . These were just beginning to germinate last month , but are now growing on nicely . They were on an unwarmed shelf in the greenhouse which saw David Low of -5 deg c during the Beast from the East a hebdomad or two back . I was worried about them , and they did look a bit lamentable for a day or two . They perked up though , and are now in the insensate - frame , limber up for a transfer of training to the plot , possibly this coming weekend .
Tomatoes & Chillies . I will be following these more closely in separate mail , but in summary , the tomatoes are doing OK , I potted on a heap at the weekend . The chillies are coming on , but very slowly . Next year I think I will rig up some insulation and firing to encourage faster ontogenesis .
Planted out on the secret plan :

Onion sets ‘ galvanic ’ . These have been overwintering in mental faculty in the nursery then the cold - frame for the last couple of weeks . For some ground the faculty were not spare - drain so they were sustain a bit quaggy . Still , they all have decent top growth and a good set of roots . I go for they will grow on OK . I have embed 9 per squre understructure , 34 onion in total as I did n’t quite have enough – I ’ve sown more spring onion into the unembellished spots .
Garlic . Several variety . All except the elephant garlic seem to be develop on well . No sign of the pachydermatous ones , I think they must have rot off in the background , or been disinterred by the local squirrel .
Rhubarb . I just have one crown , this is its tertiary twelvemonth in the priming I think . Last month it was just jab through , but now it is showing sign of the zodiac of more serious maturation .

Cabbage ‘ Rodeo ’ . Last calendar month there were 10 or 12 of these grow in a engorged corner of Bed 3 . I have remove all but 4 plants , hoping that a second of extra space will encourage more enthusiastic growth . I still might jettison these in favour of the leeks and beetroot I have planned for this spot .
mellifluous pea , several smorgasbord . These have been in the cold frame for the last month or so . They are looking a little bit bedraggled , far from the neatly vertical seedlings they were when I first propel them . Still , there are great deal of ramify halt , so I am promising of a good crop of flowers . I will plant them out at the destruction of this calendar month . Apart from anything else , I want the cold frame space !
As you may see , matter are getting in use ! How are your GYO plans coming along ?

I ’ll be back next calendar month with another plot update .
