Wondrous Wanderings at the Wildflower Center
The time of year , they ’re always a - changin ’ . As fall unfolds , theLady Bird Johnson Wildflower Centerflaunts fall sensations to instance the attractively reformist nature of native plants . Despite record passion and drouth , Lindheimer and pink - hued Gulf muhly flower dance on grassy wand . Lindheimer muhly ’s also tagged “ big muhly ” for a cause . Its stature and feathery plumes dramatize any sunny position . Until our front garden buzz off too shady , it was my married man ’s favorite view as he round the quoin on our voluptuous street . clump in group or rows blow up their grandeur . Evergreen most of the year , muhly grasses make capital “ hedges ” to dignify space , too . But Lindheimer muhly look almost grave against bushy bluestem ’s explosive puffballs . Seed heads of recurrent Liatris glimmer against its cheery grass companions . Just across the path , a few spikes hang onto the last of the recondite lavender flowers . Everywhere , perennial Plateau whistler ( Viguiera dentata ) promised pot of pollinator gold . energize sights met mood - raise phone : squeals of delight and thumps of racing lilliputian metrical foot to this year ’s freshly installed Fortlandia . One heartfelt tot ran past me quicker than the hint , joyfully scream “ Climb , climb up , climb!”SinceFortlandia lasts until January 31 , I ’ll race past her another twenty-four hours to take a chance on custom - designed fort designed and built by local architects , designers and artists .
In my two - time of day qualification slot , this time I took the path to the demonstration gardens that illustrate compatible choices to implant at base . In theHabiturf ® plot , short grasses , like blue grama , flourish flyspeck wand . Buffalograss and curly mesquite join the Habiturf ® mix to illustrate a drouth - stalwart lawn in sun . J.J. Priour’s“Local Light and Water ” cobalt blue glass and limestone sculpture elevates the broad prospect of these low beds . Indeed , it is a discipline in light . Below its plinth , geometrically pruned native silver ponyfoot , framed by glass nuggets , reminisce of silvern pools . Black dalea also hugs the ground , spilling over its limestone border with tiny purple efflorescence forcrowds of bees . Stately Maximilian helianthus screens a shady passage where a cozy judiciary ask for a break to follow pollinator zoom to those supersized efflorescence . It ’s also the fall standout in the Fiber & Dye garden , along with low - growing , frothy prairie goldenrod ( Solidago nemoralis ) , prickly pear and others . And in case you ’ve heard the myth , it ’s not true that goldenrod causes those crepuscle sneezes!Stock tanks bring another geometric and acme dimension to the rectangular layout . redolent aster ’s one of their ambassador to bees , butterflies , and many other pollinators . And what a bang to notice aired annual wild aster ( not sure which one ) tucked into another spot . These used to pelt my garden and now and then they bulge up again . Another farm animal tank hosts wild poinsettia ( Euphorbia cyathophora ) , also called Fire on the Mountain . clean gaura leans in . In every part shade blot , repeated shrub American beautyberry ’s glossy , purple fruits claim lessen celebrity after waiting in the background signal for months . There ’s lots of wonder ( and peaceful thoughts ) along the watercourse , ponds , and waterfalls . But I never expected to see a blooming crinum lily in the entering falls and pond!Reservations are call for for now , but it ’s easy to do ! Wonder expect . Thanks for stopping by ! See you next week , Linda
